The City of Long Beach today announced the creation of 121 new Alamitos Beach parking spaces along 1st Street and 2nd Street between Alamitos Avenue and Cherry Avenue.
“We are constantly striving to improve parking in impacted neighborhoods,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “These additional parking spaces are a step in the right direction for Long Beach and I look forward to the addition of more spaces in other neighborhoods throughout the City.”
The new parking spaces were created by increasing the angle of diagonal striping for already existing parking spaces on the north side of 1st Street and south side of 2nd Street. Previously, the diagonal parking spaces were striped at a 60-degree angle, by increasing the angle, the City was able to add 121 parking spaces in the area.
“Increased parking is something I have been passionate about since I took office,” said Councilmember Jeannine Pearce. “I am pleased to be working with the Public Works Department to continue seeking innovative ways to increase parking spaces where it is safe and possible to add them.”
The area along 1st Street and 2nd Street between Alamitos Avenue and Cherry Avenue is fronted by single and multi-family residential units and some businesses, and meets the City’s criteria for increased diagonal parking spaces. The existing street will remain wide enough to accommodate vehicle traffic, including safety vehicles, and has a limited amount of driveways.
